Cats are one of the nation’s most popular pets, edging out dogs but falling well behind fish.
Cats also come with health care needs that fish and dogs don’t have. Here are the top five health care issues and needs your cat has.
KIDNEYS
Older cats are more likely than young cats to be struck some form of kidney disease. Kidney failure is the biggest issue.
What causes kidney failure? Just briefly, infections, high blood pressure, immune system disorders and being exposed to some drugs and toxins are leading issues. What can you do? That depends on the cause. Infections can be treated with antibiotics. Sometimes, all you and your vet can hope to do is slow down the disease and maintain quality of life as long as possible.
HYPERTHYROIDISM
Another condition usually found in older cats, hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid starts overproducing the thyroid hormone. Fortunately, this problem is treatable. ALLERGIES
Just like humans, cats can become allergic to certain things. Isolating the allergen and removing it can help. If this can’t be done, your cat can be treated to reduce the effects.
CANCER
Cats can develop cancer. Cats share the same warning signs that humans have. The course of treatment depends on your cat, what cancer it has and what you and the vet think is best.
DIABETES
If you cat seems to be drinking and eating a lot more than usual, but is still losing weight, diabetes can be the problem. Treatment options are the same as for humans.
