Everyday Care for Your DogA dog can be a wonderful addition to your family…if you are ready for the responsibility!

A puppy can bring so much joy into your life, but it’s important to be realistic and consider what it takes to care for a dog on a daily basis. Remember, a puppy requires extra time, patience, and commitment to housebreak and train as opposed to an adult dog.

Do some research or consult a veterinarian if you have questions or concerns about breed and care before welcoming that new furry family member into your home.

Dogs do best when they have structure and follow a routine. The items listed below are important for your dog’s daily health and well-being:

  • Food – Provide high-quality nutritional food twice a day on a regular schedule (or as advised by your vet).
  • Water – A supply of clean fresh water at all times.
  • “Potty” breaks – Necessary from 3 to 5 times daily either in your fenced-in yard, or taken out on a leash (and remember to “scoop the poop”).
  • Fresh air & exercise – At least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise twice a day (walks, playtime, dog park, etc.).
  • Brushing – Depending on the type of fur, once daily may be necessary; check for fleas and ticks during the warmer months.
  • Oral Care – Keep teeth healthy by brushing daily (or at least several times per week).
  • Rest – Provide clean, comfortable bedding in a warm, quiet spot or near you while you are relaxing.
  • Safe Environment – Keep chemicals, choking hazards, and certain foods out of your dog’s reach!
  • Attention – Offer praise, hugs, kisses, petting, and treats as rewards for good behavior.
  • Structure – Setting up a routine helps them feel safe and protected.
  • Health check – Be aware of your dog’s overall health and behavior. Call the vet if you notice anything unusual.

Your furry baby will also need special grooming occasionally by you or a professional groomer.

This includes a bath, trimming of nails, cleaning eyes and ears, and possibly hair trimming. How often this needs to be done depends on the breed.
