Adopted a Shelter Pet – One of the most remarkable results from this year’s “stay home” orders is the record numbers of pet adoptions.
While it’s an ideal time for welcoming a new member to the family, rescue pets still require a transition period. Ideally, scheduling a vet well check- along with the following seven considerations- can help make the transition smoother.
1. Expect adjustment times. Though you’re welcoming them into a loving environment, it’s a new experience and home for them. A transition period may take a few days or a few weeks.
2. Limit their surrounding freedom. Give your new pet time to adjust to confined areas before free reign of the home.
3. Provide a comfort space. A crate or confined area can provide a comforting escape if they’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed.
4. Expect behavior changes. Especially within the first few days home, their behavior may seem more timid, nervous, or anxious as they familiarize themselves with new surroundings and people.
5. Expect accidents. Even house-broken pets may still have bathroom accidents as they adjust to a new routine. Maintaining calm and creating a consistent schedule/routine will help reduce frequency of accidents.
6. Allow for separation time. During these unusual times, someone may be home more often than normal schedules allow. Introduce periods of alone time so there isn’t a sudden separation shock.
7. Schedule a vet well check. Although your pet may have had a check-up prior to adoption, scheduling a well-check with your local veterinary office will build trust for you and your pet for future visits and potential emergencies.
When bringing your rescued pet for their first visit, be sure to bring their adoption papers as well as the names of any medications and food they’re currently using. Likewise, share your plans for future boarding or “daycare” needs to ensure they have all of the necessary vaccinations.
Since the vet’s office may be a new experience for both you and your pet, create a list of questions prior to your visit so all of your current concerns are addressed.
