In addition to regular shots, rabies vaccinations being a chart topper, there are a lot of reasons why people take their pets to the vet. Here are the top four.
EAR INFECTIONS
Ear infections are about as common in pets as they are in people. Most of these infections are simple matters. Ear drops for a few days clears it right up. Sometimes oral antibiotics are also needed. Symptoms are:
- Excessive head shaking
- Odor in the ears
- Ear discharge
- Head tilts
- Pawing and scratching ears
KIDNEY FAILURE
This is tied for No. 1 and is more common than ear infections in cats. Doctors call it renal failure. It means the same thing. The kidneys are not working properly. This is more common in older cats and dogs. The reasons for failure are too many to go into here. Here are the top signs of this problem:
- Excessive drinking
- Excessive urination. This happens because the remaining part of the kidneys that work kick into overdrive to rid the body of accumulating waste.
- More finicky eater. This may be a tough call for cat owners
- Sudden decreased energy
- Retching and diarrhea
ALLERGIES
Skin allergies in cats and dogs are the No. 3 spot. Hair loss, scratching with no fleas, liking the bottom of the paws frequently. If left untreated, pets can damage their skin and ears that could lead to infection. This is more common in dogs.
DIABETES
The inability to properly process sugar is diabetes. It’s the No. 3 problem for cats. Humans and other animals also get this problem. Just like humans, the problem is more common in cats as they get older.
